Publishers
Bauer Media:
Bauer media are a multi national
media company based in Germany. The company was founded in 1875 and have a 50%
stake in the box television industry.
Bauer media brands (the music
magazines) consist of Q and Kerrang. Q was published in 1986 and set itself
apart from other music magazines with monthly production and higher
quality/standards of photography and printing. Q gave more of an emphasis on
style in comparison to other magazines and is the kind of magazine that you
would keep and not throw away. Q has more value then a lot of other magazines.
The Q music brand expanded to radio and television. Things such as Q radio and
Q TV were specialised as “indie, rock, and alternative” Overall Q is looked at
more professionally than any other magazine with as it is a magazine which has
been awarded many awards.
In contrast by the same publisher
(Bauer media) we have Kerrang which specialises in rock music. Kerrang then
went on to cover things such as the “new wave of British Heavy Metal” But the
main thing I want to take from the Kerrang magazine is the emergence of emo and
metalcore. Kerrang started to heavily cover this musical genre but many readers
were not happy with the change due to the sudden emphasis on emo and metalcore
music. Kerrang also has its own radio station and a place on the box TV.
Overall Kerrang focuses a lot more on what is popular in the genre at the time
hence why many “fans” of the magazine complain about it. But they are still
curious to what Kerrang cover so this magazine is a lot more aimed at teenagers
who like the current popular genres of music and is more of a throw away
magazine. Unlike Q you would find this a lot more cheaper option where quality
is not the main concern.
As
covered earlier Bauer Media group has a 50% stake in the British television
company and owns many channels such as: Q TV, 4Music, Kiss TV, Kerrang! TV, The
box, Magic TV and Smash hits TV which mostly emphasis on the teenage rebellious
kind of audience where quality is not the main focus. This helps persuade the
audience to take notice of the magazines that Bauer media publish IPC Media
Ipc media is a consumer magazine
and digital publisher in the UK, they have a large portfolio selling over 350
million copies per year.
Ipc are also involved in many
other markets similar to the magazine industry such as newspapers, books,
printing etc. In 1988 IPC Magazines (which is now known as IPC media) was
subject to a management buyout and then was renamed to what we know it as
today. Then Cinven, who brought the company, sold it to Time Inc.
Some of the brands that the IPC
publish include:
Due to the amount of magazines that IPC publish they are the UK’s leading consumer magazine publisher and they produce over 60 iconic media brands. With print alone they engage with almost two thirds of the UK women and 42% of UK men – then their websites collectively reach over 14 million users every month.
